Today, the American Legion celebrates 99 years of serving America's veterans.
The American Legion is a U.S. veterans advocacy organization formed this day in 1919. In addition to organizing commemorative events, members of the Legion volunteer at Veterans Administration (VA) clinics and lobby for veterans benefits. Most notably, the Legion was instrumental in passing the Serviceman's Readjustment Act of 1944 -- or, the "G.I. Bill."
