We joined the 3rd Infantry Division Realism Gaming Unit with the expectation of an immersive, challenging, and rewarding team experience in Arma 3. We want it to be fun to play and worth our time. Any issues with that experience impact morale, and ultimately retention.
For a great experience, the player needs immersion (realistic Mission, Enemy, Terrain) and a sense of accomplishment (as an individual, and as part of a team, achieving success in a challenging combat mission).
Improving our capabilities in the following two areas is critical to giving our players the 3rdID Arma 3 Experience they deserve.
BLUFOR: TRAIN - FIGHT - REVIEW
TRAIN the way you FIGHT, fight the way you train. REVIEW to improve training, and ultimately combat performance.
- TRAIN (Skills and Drills)
Individual Soldier Skills (Weapons, Equipment, Movement, Navigation, Cover, Comms (Radio, Contact report, ACE report, etc.), etc.)
Battle Drills (Attack, React to Contact, Break Contact, etc.)
Break down each Battle Drill and train at all team levels - Individual, Buddy Team, Fireteam, Squad, Platoon, etc.
Schoolhouse (Written Standards for each skill and drill, steps to follow, oral brief)
Dry Fire (slow walkthrough to start, then speed up to combat pace)
Live Fire (light contact at first, ramped up to equal force, then to superior force)
- FIGHT (Plan-Prep-Execute)
Plan - METT-TC, War Room, OPORD
Prep - Squad Drills/FTX, Pre-Mission (PCC/PCI), Platoon Brief (Arma 3 Map markers)
Execute - TLP, C3, Intel/Recon, ROE/EOF, TCCC, Fire Support, Logistics, etc.
- REVIEW (AARs, Individual and Team Performance Reviews, Inspections)
Mission Replay - Friendly Positions/Actions, Enemy Positions/Actions, Phases/Engagements
The Good (by Phase)
The Bad (by Phase)
Mission/Training Eval (Overall, but also individual components - meets standard, exceeds standard, improvement needed)
OPFOR/REDFOR - Balanced Realism
Enemy AI and Players - Realism, but balanced against BLUFOR capabilities (including manpower and training).
Recruit/train a group of personnel with the necessary skills to make ALiVE and Zeus missions an immersive and challenging team experience worthy of the players’ time. For example, develop a formal Zeus training and certification course open to all personnel. Consider adding Zeus Operator to one of the 3rdID Staff functions. Also consider forming a dedicated OPFOR/REDFOR Cadre.
