During Shaping Operation 4 of Operation Wet Feet, SPC J. Mitchell displayed sustained initiative in the assault on a well-defended enemy Mortar Pit that had been shelling the platoon throughout the operation. When the squad was pinned down and a grenade incapacitated most of the element, including his Squad Leader, Mitchell moved the wounded to the CCP on his own initiative. Rather than wait for reinforcement, he and CPL Siebens pushed toward the pit; when Siebens was struck by machine gun fire at an intersection, Mitchell dragged him to safety, moved up on Platoon net, reported the casualty, and continued the advance. Closing on the objective alone, Mitchell cleared the position with grenades, eliminating the Gun and Mortar crew and enemies attempting to flee, and held it until the squad recovered. His choice to repeatedly press the fight on his own, absorbing the loss of his Team Leader without losing momentum and clearing a hardened position single-handedly silenced a threat that had endangered the platoon multiple times across the operation, and reflects great credit on himself and his unit.
