For meritorious combat achievement in support of aerial flight operations during Operation Wet Feet: Mission Ao Run and Operation Wet Feet: Shaping Operation 5. During the last objective of the Ao Run, the Huey Helicopter crew piloted by Sevstant and Blackwoode came under heavy direct fire from a BTR. The fire severely damaged the helicopter and incapacitated the Co-Pilot, Blackwoode, and severely injured the Pilot-in-Command, Sevstant. Seeing this, Crew Chief Hoffman immediately jumped into action to perform emergency medical aid for Blackwoode while Sevstant fought the damaged helicopter for control while still under direct fire. Hoffman’s medical efforts culminated in the revival of Blackwoode. As soon as Blackwoode was revived, Hoffman jumped back on the door gun of the Huey and commenced accurate and effective defensive fire, allowing Sevstant to fly the damaged Helicopter out and towards the base of operations. During Shaping Operation 5, Hoffman was a part of the Warchief 6 crew that was shot down northeast of the company marshalling area. Injured, Hoffman awoke to the airframe being set upon by an enemy squad sized element and immediately opened fire in defense of the airframe. Hoffman successfully dispatched five enemy combatants before the pilots awoke from their injuries and joined in the defense. His defense of the aircraft while under injury allowed for a full recovery of the Warchief 6 crew despite the loss of the airframe. Hoffman’s efforts in the aircraft as Crew Chief were nothing short of exceptional. His efforts have directly allowed for aviation elements to continue operating with no losses despite multiple situations where survival seemed dubious.
