During shaping operation 5, 4th Squad was tasked with securing a three story building as a stepping stone for further taskings. While bounding the Support by Fire team came under effective enemy small arms fire, sustaining 2 casualties with a third wounded. Without the vital fire support the attack element came under heavy pressure, sustaining casualties themselves. The Private Second Class accompanied the Platoon Sergeant to aid the attack force while the arriving medical personnel saw to the support by fire element. After successfully alleviating the pressure on the strained attack force and securing the building. Private Martin immediately began coordinating and aiding in casualty care, directly contributing to the survival of two casualties from phoenix as well as additional members of other elements. The actions of Private Second Class Cody Martin reflect great credit upon himself and the 3rd Infantry Division.
