During Mission Candyland,1st Squad took indirect fire on their defensive position on a remote mountainside which resulted in an immediate mass casualty event, PFC Lanza was one of the only three members of the squad that were left standing from the event, which left none of the leadership standing. The PFC was able to successfully bring back an overwhelming majority of the squad with his medical training, though lacking CLS permissions. The PFC was able to get the platoon doc back up in a matter of a minute or so who was able to help him with the rest of the casualties during the time, while getting the last couple members of the squad medical attention, a group of paratroopers were being dropped only 200 meters from 1st Squad’s position when ANOTHER round of indirect fire, then splashed and took out all of the leadership once again. This time the platoon doc was left standing to help assess casualties and work on the rest of the squad. The PFC was able to not only work on medical but also provide cover fire for the platoon doc who was working on the squad’s leadership personnel at the time. With his training and quick thinking a good majority of the squad was saved from being KIA’d. The PFC’s knowledge and expertise are definitely in keeping with the highest traditions and honor within the 3rd infantry division.
