Today we are honoring and recognizing Armed Forces Day.
Celebrated on the third Saturday of May, it's a day to recognize and thank the individuals currently serving in the U.s military. It's a way to our gratitude and appreciation for their dedication and sacrifice. Established in 1949 by secretary of Defense Lous Johnson to replace individual days of celebration for each military branch and reinforce their unifications under the Department of Defense. President Harry s Truman officially made it a holiday in 1950, and President John F. Kennedy formalized it in 1961.
The Goals included.
Celebrating service members recognizing both current and former service members.
Promoting unity highlighting the unification of the miliary branches.
Public awareness education the public about the military's role and showcasing new technology.
Community support by expressing gratitude for the armed forces through ceremonies. Events, Flyovers, Marches and parades.
These three holidays should not be confused. Memorial Day is a federal holiday that remembers and mourns people who have died in U.S. military service. Veterans day also a federal holiday, honors the service of all U.S. military veterans, both living and deceased.
The month of May is synonymous with Memorial Day Weekend, but the entire month was designated by the United States Congress in 1999 to be Military Appreciation Month. In addition to Memorial Day which honors those who have died during military service on the last Monday of the month May also includes Military Spouse Appreciation Day (which is always the Friday before Mother's Day) and Armed Forces Day (the third Saturday in May).
Armed Forces Day, meanwhile, celebrates everyone currently serving in the U.S. armed forces. Unlike Memorial Day and Veterans Day, Armed Forces Day is not an official federal holiday. Understanding the differences between these three important holidays is more than just a matter of etiquette, it’s a demonstration of genuine respect for our military community. Each day serves a unique purpose. By honoring that, we ensure that the sacrifices and service of our troops are never overlooked or misunderstood.
Here are some quotes.
"Armed Forces Day, above all, honors the dedicated individuals who wear the uniforms of their country. Each serviceman, wherever he may be, whatever his task, contributes directly and importantly to the defense of the nation. The task of each one is the task of all the armed forces: to protect the freedoms which underlie the greatness of America." General Earle G. Wheeler
"There is nothing stronger than the heart of a volunteer." — General James H. Doolittle
"Armed Forces Day, and the Memorial Day weekend that follows, is a time to honor, remember and recognize those who serve and have served our country, as well as those who have died in service. As we reflect, let's not forget the many sacrifices made at home as well in support of our men and women in uniform." — Chuck Norris
