Founded on March 5, 1942, roots dating back to WW2 too meet the growing navy needs to build bases, camps among other parts of the war. They have found themselves in most major U.S conflicts. The Seabees of the United States navy was born in the dark days following pearl harbor when the task of building victory from defeat seemed almost insurmountable.
The Seabees were created in answer to a crucial demand for builders who could fight! The nick name CBs came from construction battalion depending on context. The Seabees are part of the U.S Naval construction forces NCF. Founded by Rear Admiral Ben Morell, CEC USN. The first U.S Navy Seabees to serve under combat conditions was during the Guadalcanal campaign arriving in September. They built the Henderson airfield on Guadalcanal under heavy fire, Naval constructions Battalions were conceived of as replacement for civilian construction companies in combat zones after the attack on Pearl Harbor.
At the time civilian contractors had 70,000 men working in the U.S.N. contracts overseas. International law made it illegal for civilian workers to resist an attack. Doing so would classify them as guerillas and could lead to a summary execution. Admiral Morell's concept model CB (Seabees) was USMC trained military equivalent of those civilian companies able to work anywhere, under any conditions or circumstances.
As time rolled on the axis was making headway, they had their first combat landing in North Africa in November 1942. The Seabees skillset became multi-faceted with all advance military training being USMC instructed. As from engagements from Guam, Peleliu, Tarawa, Iwo Jima, Normandy, the Korean war Inchon landing, and Vietnam Khe Sanh thru desert storm and many more including disaster and relief. The Seabees are still playing a vital role for our military to this date. Even today train trussells and bridges still in use today as that leaves a big history mark for them! When World War II ended, they were originally part of the navy reserve but became a permanent part of the U. S Navy in 1947.The Seabees participated in the national interest nuclear testing, space race, military communications, international relations, pure science, and construction of Camp David among many other things, let’s wish them a happy 83rd birthday!
Their motto. We build; we fight! Construimus, Batuimus which is Latin.
