Conduct Downed Aircraft Recovery Team (DART) and repair systems training
Accidents
NSTR
Areas of Strength
Utilizing a CH-47 for sling loading procedures; Aviators and Crew were able to successfully hook up a UH-60, an AH-64 and return both of the damaged airframes to base.
Areas of Weakness
Communication with airframe repairs needs to be improved, state what part of the damaged airframe you're repairing so we don't have two Soldiers working on the same part and wasting viable time.
Suggested Improvements
Flight Drill times to be planned for minimum 90 minutes and maximum 120 minutes on Saturdays, Standardization Pilots to create training outline for each month on Aviation procedures that need to be brushed up on each week, Instructor Pilots will rotate delegation of training each week to teach a portion of the training outline.
Mission Summary
ITERATION 1: (DAY) AH-64 flew to random point on map, landed in challenging terrain and ZEUS induced damages to be repaired. CH-47 along with UH-60 escort and other aviatiors / crew chiefs road along to observe the process in the field. AH-64 could not be repaired in the field due to unexpected technical setting in the ACE Logistics server setting which slowed the repair process exponentially. This iteration was changed from a repair on site and return to the secondary of Non-field repairable sling load to back to airfield for full repairs at the main FARP.
ITERATION 2: (NIGHT OPS). UH-60 Was flown to random point on map and landed. Damages to make the aircraft inoperable were induced. AH-64 proceeded to orbit on station to provide security. CH-47 (DART) flew to crash site dropped off the crew chief to attach the ropes. CH-47 proceeded to lift the UH-60 back to base and crew cheif was recovered by Trailing UH-60 to return back to air field.
ITERATION 3: (DAY) Placed UH-60 on runway to test if CH-47 can 1: drop of crew chief, perform hover over aircraft to be lifted, then extend ropes to max extent and land next to damaged aircraft to have stranded crew and crew chiefs reload into the CH-47 for return.
