Army Values & Creeds

Many people know what the words Loyalty, Duty, Respect, Selfless Service, Honor, Integrity, and Personal Courage mean. But how often do you see someone actually live up to them? Soldiers learn these values in detail during Basic Combat Training (BCT), from then on they live them every day in everything they do — whether they’re on the job or off. In short, the Seven Core Army Values are what being a Soldier is all about. Click the title below to see the Values, Creeds, and Songs.

Seven Army Core Values

Bearing true faith and allegiance is a matter of believing in and devoting yourself to something or someone. A loyal Soldier is one who supports the leadership and stands up for fellow Soldiers. By wearing the uniform of the U.S. Army you are expressing your loyalty. And by doing your share, you show your loyalty to your unit.

Doing your duty means more than carrying out your assigned tasks. Duty means being able to accomplish tasks as part of a team. The work of the U.S. Army is a complex combination of missions, tasks and responsibilities — all in constant motion. Our work entails building one assignment onto another. You fulfill your obligations as a part of your unit every time you resist the temptation to take “shortcuts” that might undermine the integrity of the final product.

In the Soldier’s Code, we pledge to “treat others with dignity and respect while expecting others to do the same.” Respect is what allows us to appreciate the best in other people. Respect is trusting that all people have done their jobs and fulfilled their duty. And self-respect is a vital ingredient with the Army value of respect, which results from knowing you have put forth your best effort. The Army is one team and each of us has something to contribute.

Selfless service is larger than just one person. In serving your country, you are doing your duty loyally without thought of recognition or gain. The basic building block of selfless service is the commitment of each team member to go a little further, endure a little longer, and look a little closer to see how he or she can add to the effort.

The nation’s highest military award is The Medal of Honor. This award goes to Soldiers who make honor a matter of daily living — Soldiers who develop the habit of being honorable, and solidify that habit with every value choice they make. Honor is a matter of carrying out, acting, and living the values of respect, duty, loyalty, selfless service, integrity and personal courage in everything you do.

Integrity is a quality you develop by adhering to moral principles. It requires that you do and say nothing that deceives others. As your integrity grows, so does the trust others place in you. The more choices you make based on integrity, the more this highly prized value will affect your relationships with family and friends, and, finally, the fundamental acceptance of yourself.

Personal courage has long been associated with our Army. With physical courage, it is a matter of enduring physical duress and at times risking personal safety. Facing moral fear or adversity may be a long, slow process of continuing forward on the right path, especially if taking those actions is not popular with others. You can build your personal courage by daily standing up for and acting upon the things that you know are honorable.

Warrior Ethos

I will always place the mission first.

I will never accept defeat.

I will never quit.

I will never leave a fallen comrade.

Soldier's Creed

I am an American Soldier.

I am a warrior and a member of a team.

I serve the people of the United States, and live the Army Values.

I will always place the mission first.

I will never accept defeat.

I will never quit.

I will never leave a fallen comrade.

I am disciplined, physically and mentally tough, trained and proficient in my warrior tasks and drills.

I always maintain my arms, my equipment and myself.

I am an expert and I am a professional.

I stand ready to deploy, engage, and destroy, the enemies of the United States of America in close combat.

I am a guardian of freedom and the American way of life.

I am an American Soldier.

NCO's Creed

No one is more professional than I. I am a noncommissioned officer, a leader of Soldiers. As a noncommissioned officer, I realize that I am a member of a time honored corps, which is known as "The Backbone of the Army". I am proud of the Corps of noncommissioned officers and will at all times conduct myself so as to bring credit upon the Corps, the military service and my country regardless of the situation in which I find myself. I will not use my grade or position to attain pleasure, profit, or personal safety.

Competence is my watchword. My two basic responsibilities will always be uppermost in my mind—accomplishment of my mission and the welfare of my Soldiers. I will strive to remain technically and tactically proficient. I am aware of my role as a noncommissioned officer. I will fulfill my responsibilities inherent in that role. All Soldiers are entitled to outstanding leadership; I will provide that leadership. I know my Soldiers and I will always place their needs above my own. I will communicate consistently with my Soldiers and never leave them uninformed. I will be fair and impartial when recommending both rewards and punishment.

Officers of my unit will have maximum time to accomplish their duties; they will not have to accomplish mine. I will earn their respect and confidence as well as that of my Soldiers. I will be loyal to those with whom I serve; seniors, peers, and subordinates alike. I will exercise initiative by taking appropriate action in the absence of orders. I will not compromise my integrity, nor my moral courage. I will not forget, nor will I allow my comrades to forget that we are professionals, noncommissioned officers, leaders!

Army Song

"The Army Goes Rolling Along"

Third Infantry Division Song

"Dogface Soldier Song"

This song was used in the Audie Murphy movie To Hell and Back, based on this autobiography of the same name, and is the offical song of the 3rd Infantry Division.

Rangers Creed

Recognizing that I volunteered as a Ranger, fully knowing the hazards of my chosen profession, I will always endeavor to uphold the prestige, honor, and high esprit de corps of the Rangers.

Acknowledging the fact that a Ranger is a more elite Soldier who arrives at the cutting edge of battle by land, sea, or air, I accept the fact that as a Ranger my country expects me to move further, faster and fight harder than any other Soldier.

Never shall I fail my comrades. I will always keep myself mentally alert, physically strong and morally straight and I will shoulder more than my share of the task whatever it may be, one-hundred-percent and then some.

Gallantly will I show the world that I am a specially selected and well-trained Soldier. My courtesy to superior officers, neatness of dress and care of equipment shall set the example for others to follow.

Energetically will I meet the enemies of my country. I shall defeat them on the field of battle for I am better trained and will fight with all my might. Surrender is not a Ranger word. I will never leave a fallen comrade to fall into the hands of the enemy and under no circumstances will I ever embarrass my country.

Readily will I display the intestinal fortitude required to fight on to the Ranger objective and complete the mission though I be the lone survivor.

Rangers lead the way!

Discharging

Discharge Policy

Document Version 1.2

Chapter 1

1-1. Overview

The 3rd Infantry Division has a structured and established format for discharging soldiers including rewarding those who have extended good service as well as restricting those who do not meet the standards of the 3rd ID from re-enlisting. This policy outlines the process, procedures and outcomes of various forms of separation with the unit.

1-2. Discharge Types

The 3rd Infantry Division has several types of discharges that reflect the conduct of soldiers whilst enlisted in the unit. Each one has specific re-enlistment outcomes attached to them as explained in chapter two.

Types of Discharge

  • Retirement
  • Honorable Discharge
  • General Discharge
  • Entry Level Separation
  • Other than Honorable Discharge
  • Bad Conduct Discharge
  • Dishonorable Discharge

1-3. Away Without Leave

Away Without Leave (AWOL) is determined as a soldier missing three (3) events in a row without a Temporary Pass Request (TPR). Private Trainee’s are considered AWOL if they miss two (2) events in a row. Soldiers are also listed as Away Without Leave (AWOL) when said soldier fails to report in via PERSCOM- Operation Center every 10 days.

If a soldier is determined to be AWOL, they can only be discharged under the following categories:

  • General Discharge
  • Entry Level Separation
  • Other than Honorable Discharge
  • Bad Conduct Discharge
  • Dishonorable Discharge

Chapter 2

2-1. Retirement

Retirement is the highest level of honorable discharge that a soldier may be awarded within the 3rd Infantry Division. It is awarded to soldiers who have shown extreme dedication to the unit and have served for an extended period of time.

Requirements

Soldiers are eligible to request a Retirement Discharge if they meet the following requirements.

  • At least 365 days of Time in Service (TIS).
  • Maintain the rank of Sergeant or Chief Warrant Officer 2 or higher.
  • Be within an active billet for at least the previous 90 days.
  • Provide at a minimum, 30 days notice of retirement.
  • Soldiers applying for retirement must continue to uphold their duties during this time, otherwise their Retirement will be denied.
  • Approval from Commanding Staff.

Retired personnel retain their rank, XML, forum access and are given retired Teamspeak permissions. They are added to the "Retired Personnel" roster. In lieu of rank, their forum username will change to "RET FI. Last name."

Re-Enlistment

Retired personnel seeking to return to active duty will typically be reinstated at the rank of E-4b Specialist. However, efforts will be made to restore the soldier to their previous rank if a suitable position is available. Promotion to E-4a Corporal or higher is contingent upon the availability of billeted positions and approval from command staff. Retired soldiers must submit a re-enlistment request via private message to the unit commanding officer.

Soldiers may request a re-retirement discharge if they meet the following criteria:

  • Have served at least 365 days of Time in Service (TIS).
  • Maintain the rank of Sergeant or Chief Warrant Officer 2 or higher.
  • Have been within an active billet for at least the previous 90 days.
  • Provide a minimum of 30 days' notice of retirement.
  • Maintain duties and responsibilities until retirement, failing which, the retirement request may be denied.
  • Obtain approval from commanding staff.

Upon re-retirement, the soldier will be retired at the highest rank achieved during their prior service. For example, if SSG Smith retired in 2021, eligible to retire as a Sergeant First Class, and re-enlisted as a Specialist in 2023, serving for at least 365 days and being promoted to Sergeant during that time, upon re-retirement in 2024, SGT Smith would be promoted back to Staff Sergeant, reflecting the highest rank attained during their initial retirement.

Restrictions

Retired Personnel, whilst maintained on the unit’s roster, are not active personnel and therefore not subject to the multi-unit policy. Due to this, and their extended commitment to the unit for extended periods of service, they may be eligible to operate with other MILSIM units as long as the following requirements are met.

  • Have at least 12 Months accumulated service
  • Honor a separation period of 120 days before enlisting with other units/groups from date of discharge
  • Receive a waiver of approval from Command Staff prior to joining other units

Upon approval from Command Staff, a service record entry will be placed into the personnel record indicating a waiver had been granted. Retired soldiers who have not met the above criteria and are found to be in violation of the unit's policy regarding Honorable Retirement and/or the unit's multi-unit policy, may receive a discharge with appropriate grade at Command Staff's discretion. This will usually be an ‘Honorable Discharge or General Discharge’.

2-2. Honorable Discharge

Honorable Discharge is the second level of honorable discharge that a soldier may be awarded within the 3rd Infantry Division. It is awarded to soldiers who have shown dedication to the unit and have served for an extended period of time but do not for whatever reason meet the criteria of a Retirement.

Requirements

Soldiers are eligible to request an Honorable Discharge if they meet the following requirements.

  • At least 180 days of Time in Service (TIS)
  • Maintain the rank of E-4b Specialist or higher
  • Be within an active billet for at least the previous 45 days
  • Approval from Command Headquarters

Honorable personnel do not retain their rank, XML, forum or teamspeak permissions.

Re-Enlistment

Honorably Discharged personnel who are seeking to re-enlist with the 3rd Infantry Division may be eligible to rejoin the unit at their discharged rank or at least the rank of E-4b Specialist.

Requirements to rejoin at the same rank of discharge are subject to the following:

  • An open billet
  • Less than 180 days since they have discharged

If they are discharged for longer than 180 days they will be subject to re-enlisting at the rank and grade of E-3 Private First Class.

2-3. General Discharge

The General Discharge is the most common form of separation that is available within the unit. It is awarded to soldiers who have been enlisted in the 3rd Infantry Division for less than 180 days.

Requirements

Soldiers are eligible to request a General Discharge if they meet the following requirements

  • Less than 180 days of Time in Service (TIS)
  • May hold any rank

General Discharges do not retain their rank, XML, forum or teamspeak permissions. The Discharge variant will be applied to any soldier automatically if they have the rank of Private Second Class (PV2) or higher unless another discharge type is requested and approved.

Re-Enlistment

General Discharged personnel who are seeking to re-enlist with the 3rd Infantry Division may be eligible to rejoin the unit if they meet the following criteria:

Criteria

  • An open billet
  • Less than 90 days since they have been discharged
  • Required to complete One Station Unit Training again.
  • Approval from Command Headquarters

Depending on the rank that was held at the time of discharge, the enlistee may be eligible to re-join as either:

  • A one grade demotion upon re-enlistment if discharged as a Specialist or below.
  • Re-enlistment as a Specialist if discharged as a Corporal or higher then re-enlist within 90 days from discharge.

Individuals who have been discharged for longer than 90 days, but less than 180 will be eligible to rejoin the unit with the rank and grade of E-2 Private Second Class, regardless of the rank held when discharged.

If the period of discharge is more than 180 days, the enlistee will have to complete One Station Unit Training again and be enlisted as a Private Trainee.

2-4. Entry Level Separation

Entry Level Separation is an automatic form of discharge given to soldiers who have failed to be promoted to E-2 Private Second Class.

Requirements

Entry Level Separation requirements:

  • Have the rank of Private Trainee
  • Fail to complete One Station Unit Training (OSUT) within 30 days.
  • Soldiers can receive a waiver to 45 days for extenuating circumstances through Command Headquarters.
  • For any reason not specified at the discretion of Command Staff for a soldier who has not been promoted to at least E-2 Private Second Class within 30 days of enlistment.

Entry Level Separations do not retain their rank, XML, forum or teamspeak permissions.

Re-Enlistment

Entry Level Separation personnel who are seeking to re-enlist with the 3rd Infantry Division will have to wait thirty (30) days since their discharge date to be eligible to rejoin. They will be required to successfully pass the enlistment process and re-do all the training required.

Entry Level Separation is given to any member who fails to complete One Station Unit Training (OSUT) or applicable base level training within the unit. This includes whether a soldier is unable to attend training due or whether they fail the training in question.

2-5. Other than Honorable Discharge

Other than Honorable Discharges do not retain no permissions or rank however may retain guest access to the teamspeak and forums.

2-6. Bad Conduct Discharge

The Bad Conduct Discharge is given to soldiers who are found guilty under Court Martial or other Judicial Proceedings if they have committed a serious offense or a series of breaches of the Code of Conduct and Unit Bylaws. Usually given when violating multi-unit policy.

Re-Enlistment

Soldiers looking to re-enlist with the 3rd Infantry Division must wait at least 365 days before being eligible to reenlist and are subject to completing all training again as well as receiving a waiver from Command Staff. After 180 days have passed, this may be appealed and reduced to an Other than Honorable Discharge if successful.

Bad Conduct Discharges retain no permissions or rank and will be banned from all unit services for a period between 60 - 120 days. At the conclusion of this time period, guest access to the teamspeak and forum may be allowed if approved by Command Staff.

Training & Schools

One Station Unit Training (OSUT)

Upon acceptance into the unit, soldiers complete an orientation and then Initial Entry Training (IET).

Once assigned to a squad, new soldiers then enter "One Station Unit Training" (OSUT). OSUT comprises 5 phases, Red Phase, White Phase, Blue Phase, Black Phase, and Gold Phase.

In Armed Assault (Arma) soldiers, Red and White phases are completed during Basic Combat Training (BCT) while Blue, Black, and Gold Phases are completed during Advanced Individual Training (AIT).

Basic Combat Training (BCT)

Basic Combat Training is the second portion of One Station Unit Training (OSUT), followed and completed by Advanced Individual Training. The purpose of BCT is to prepare all soldiers to serve as an entry level soldier within their game and MOS.

Advanced Individual Training (AIT)

Although Basic Combat Training gives soldiers the basics to successfully serve within the unit, Advanced Individual Training is designed to prepare soldiers to perform specialised functions for their game and MOS. All Arma Infantry soldiers are required to attend AIT. Any soldiers inducted into the unit to fill a specific MOS such as 19D, 68W, 153A, 15 Series, 25C, 13F would recieve their specific training here. (Although these MOS are currently only available as promotion from within.)

Basic Training Schools

The 3rd Infantry Division offers a number of Basic Training Schools to it's soldiers. All of the Basic Schools are open and available to soldiers after they have completed One Station Unit Training. Typically Basic Schools last around 90 minutes and never require a second or third day of training. This may include but not limited to; Combat Lifesaver Course, Land Navigation Course, Advanced Radio Communications Course, Explosives and Demolition Course and Long Range Precision Course.

Combat Lifesaver Course(CLS)

The Combat Lifesaver Qualification trains soldiers to be proficient in ACE3 medical and allows them to better respond to mass casualty situations. The Combat Lifesaver Qualification grants soldiers the ability to carry Epinephrine Auto-injectors and other life saving procedures. This is the official medical training course conducted by the US Army, intended to provide an intermediate step between the buddy aid-style basic life support taught to every soldier. The combat lifesaver is primarily responsible for providing emergency medical treatment at point of wounding on the battlefield, limited primary care, and health protection and evacuation from a point of injury or illness.

Prerequisites:
Rank of E-2 (Private Second Class)

Driver And Operator Course(DOC)

The Driver and Operator Course trains Soldiers in the use of Army wheeled vehicles and equipment. Trainees learn vehicle operation, Preventive Maintenance Checks and Services (PMCS), military driving tactics and techniques, and convoy operations. The course qualifies graduates to operate all wheeled motor vehicles in the 3rd Infantry Division Motor Pool.

Prerequisites:
Rank of E-2 (Private Second Class)

Land Navigation Course(LANDNAV)

The Land Navigation Qualification trains soldiers to plot 8 digit grid points, use the baseplate compass and learn the major, minor and supplementary terrain features. The Land Navigation Qualification does not grant any special equipment.

Prerequisites:
Rank of E-2 (Private Second Class)

Advanced Radio Communications Course(ARCC)

The Advanced Radio Communications Qualification trains soldiers in proper voice procedure, radios, and SALUTE reports. By the end of this Qualification soldiers should be able to report in and speak with confidence on radio frequinces.

Prerequisites:
Rank of E-2 (Private Second Class)

Explosives And Demolition Course(EOD)

The Explosives and Demolition Qualification trains soldiers to be able to safely employ demolitions, disarm explosives and use breaching charges. The Explosives and Demolition Qualification grants soldiers the ability to carry explosives, breaching charges and a defusal kit. To attend Explosives and Demolition Course you must be Ranger Qualified.

Prerequisites:
Rank of E-3 (Private First Class)
Ranger School Qualification

Squad Designated Marksman Course(SDM)

Squad Designated Marksman Course is the initial qualification course for the unit’s Designated Marksmen. Soldiers train using the M-14 DMR to engage point targets day or night from 500 to 750 meters. The squad designated marksman is a secondary role that qualified Soldiers can fill according to mission requirements. The course consists of use of the Kestrel device, rangefinding, optics, and long range shooting under stress using the ACE3 Advanced Ballistics system.

Prerequisites:
Rank of E-4b (Specialist)
Land Navigation Qualification

Long Range Precision Course(LRPS)

Long Range Precision course is the training and qualification course for our Designated Marksmen. The designated marksman is a secondary MOS/role that soldiers can fill according to mission requirements. The weapon used is the MK11 DMR rifle. The course consists of range estimation, target detection, ballistics, night shooting, unknown distance qualification, and alternate shooting positions.

Prerequisites:
Rank of E-4b (Specialist)
Land Navigation Qualification
Squad Designated Marksman Qualification

Advanced Training Schools

The 3rd Infantry Division offers a number of Advanced Training Schools to it's soldiers. All Advanced Schools require soldiers to have preobtained qualifications prior to attending for slots. Advanced Schools are often longer in length and can require multiple prerequisites to attend. The selection and pass rate are also narrowed up to promote a higher standard of excellence. Typically Advanced Schools last around 120-180 minutes and may require a second or third day of training. This may include but not limited to; Ranger School, Airborne School, Air Assault School, Pathfinder School, Expert Infantryman Badge Course and Expert Field Medical Badge Course

Ranger School

Ranger School is one of the toughest training courses for which a Soldier can volunteer. Army Rangers are experts in leading Soldiers on difficult missions— and to do this they need rigorous training. Over 3 phases, Ranger students train to exhaustion, pushing the limits of their minds and skills.

The purpose of the U.S. Army's Ranger Course is to prepare these Army volunteers — both Officers and enlisted Soldiers — in combat arms related functional skills. The Rangers' primary mission is to engage in close combat and direct-fire battles.

Prerequisites:
Rank of E-3 (Private First Class)
Land Navigation Qualification
Airborne School Qualification or Air Assault School Qualification

Airborne School

The purpose of the Basic Airborne Course is to qualify the volunteer in the use of the parachute as a means of combat deployment and to develop leadership, self-confidence, and an aggressive spirit through mental and physical conditioning.

Airborne Soldiers have a long and distinguished tradition of being an elite body of fighting men and women–people who have always set the example for determination and courage. When you volunteer for this training, you accept the challenge of continuing this tradition. The Airborne Soldiers of the past set high standards–it is now up to you to maintain them!

Prerequisites:
Rank of E-2 (Private Second Class)
Land Navigation Qualification

Jump Master School

The purpose of the Jumpmaster School is to train and qualify Jumpmasters and Safety Personnel in the skills needed to execute a combat-equipped jump day or night. It teaches the duties and responsibilities of the Jumpmster and Safety, the use of individual equipment and aircraft, and the procedures utilized to drop paratroopers into hostile terrain.

At Jumpmaster School, Trainees learn how to brief, inspect, and lead Airborne Soldiers in jumps from high-performance aircraft. Graduates are qualified to instruct at Airborne Schools and serve as Jumpmaster or Safety during official combat jumps.

Prerequisites:
Rank of E-4A (Corporal) or higher
Currently serve as Drill Sergeant, Drill Instructor, or Administrative Cadre
Land Navigation and Airborne Qualifications
Minimum 4 combat and/or training jumps

Air Assault School

Air Assault School is designed to prepare Soldiers for insertion, evacuation, and pathfinder missions that call for the use of multipurpose transportation and assault helicopters. Air Assault training focuses on the mastery of rappelling techniques and sling load procedures, skills that involve intense concentration and a commitment to safety and preparation.

Prerequisites:
Rank of E-2 (Private Second Class)
Land Navigation Qualification

Pathfinder School

Army Pathfinders are specialists in navigating their way through foreign terrain and establishing safe landing zones for Airborne and Air Assault Soldiers or Army aircraft. Many times they are asked to parachute into remote areas, navigate their way to unobstructed locations, then relay those coordinates back to a command center. The mission of the U.S. Army Pathfinder School is to provide a three week course in which the student navigates dismounted, establishes and operates a day/night helicopter landing zone, establishes and operates a day/night Army VIRS parachute DZ, conducts sling load operations, provides air traffic control and navigational assistance to RW and FW airborne operations.

Prerequisites:
Rank of E-3 (Private First Class)
Airborne School Qualification
Air Assault School Qualification
Land Navigation Qualification
Advanced Radio Communications Qualification

Expert Infantryman Course(EIB)

Like the EFMB course, the Expert Infantryman Course is mostly a qualification event. Soldiers are tested and expected to demonstrate proficiency in all warrior tasks.
