Get to Know SPC D.Scott: Soldier of the Quarter Interview
Tell us a little of yourself:
Im a 34 year old bloke, from Norway, and one of the oldest guys in my squad. Im one of those persons who enjoy it when you "spin a lot of plates" due to much work.
I work in the Norwegian Armed Forces (Not full time), I work as a "Fire-Safety Engineer and I have recently just started my own security engineer company.
Asside of that, Im just a regular dude, with a son that is convincing my girlfriend every day that playing video games is a good and social thing.
Why did you join the 3rd ID and what keeps you here:
I've been "two tours" in the unit, the first time was back in 2013. Got myself a new PC to play Arma2: Operation Arrowhead, and all of a sudden I stumbled across this unit and joined it for about 1,5years before retiring due to reallife happenings. I joined back in last year because I missed it, the camaraderie, the classes, the playstyle, the online "work" outside of the playing part. I missed the brotherhood and the potion of sharing your knowledge and participation in helping others, both inside of the unit aswell as outside of it.
Any favorite / funny / memorable moment throughout your whole time in the unit?
First tour: When Sergeant Jeffery Doten pulled me into the Major's office, and shared that he wanted me to take over the Squad after him in 2013. Which eventually brought me to the time when I was a Drill Sergeant, and saw all my students take root and achieve their goals in the unit. Take McIntosh as an example. He was one of my graduates back then, now, 12 years after he's one one my squad mates, and is rocking it!
Second tour: When graduating from Ranger School! It has since my first try back in 2014, been the achievement I never got due to technical issues.. Being able to achieve it alongside the others was for me something that pushed my boundaries; it was challenging, it was mentally tough and is one of those things that will stick in me forever.
And I have to mention, when the donations were ticking in like crazy, and we almost had Major LaFlash cut he's hair of!! (Super funny moment for me!)
Any advice to give to your fellow soldiers to help them in their careers here?
Show up willing to learn. Don't be afraid to ask questions or give feedback, work for what you think is right, and stick with your fellow soldiers! They are your friends in here, if you both strive to follow SOP as a minimum, and do alittlebit more than you think is enough, it means alot to the ones around you and the experience in total. Never do something to get awards; do it because you want it. One of my previous leaders once said to me:
"The more you put into the unit, the more you get out of it". Leadership isn’t about rank or talking the loudest; it’s about doing your job, helping the guys next to you, and being open to feedback. You lean on the team, keep pushing, and focus on getting the mission done the right way.
What army value is the most important to you and why?
In LDRSHIP everyone of them is important! But If I have to pick one; Integrity is the Army value that matters most to me.
To me, integrity means holding myself to the standard before expecting it from anyone else. I don’t see respect as something that comes with rank, it’s in my eyes something you earn over time through consistent actions, professionalism, and how you treat others. I try to do things the right way, follow SOPs, and avoid shortcuts, even when it would be easier to take them, and even when nobody's watching.
What motivates you to keep pushing toward in the unit and do you have any goals for the future within the unit?
Helping others is something that's always motivated me. Watching others grow and achieve is very joyable for me, especially when I've been able to share/teach a thing or two. Another thing that motivates me, is the opportunity to participate and create something for others to use in the future. All the work with the Reforger transfer had been very motivating for me, and I've loved all of it. Building the maps / worlds is very picky work, but seeing the result where others take joy out of it, is a huge reward.
There is a saying, "Officers command the Army, NCO's actually run it.". I love executing, supervising, training the men & women and handle the practical & technical work, so if a Platoon Sergeant position gets available in the future I will aim for that.
Also, cant forget: this time, I WILL have my "Norwegian Squad" at some point. Major LaFlash promised me I could have one back in 2013, in 2025 I took it as a challenge!
Any valuable lessons you have learned while being in the unit?
All of it. I keep telling new enlistees that one of the things I love about the unit is the courses that you can take. They will help you grow in the unit, but also give you a thing or two that you can utilize in the reallife aswell. LandNav and WLC for example, and last but not least; Ranger School! It taught me how important it is to stick to the basics when things get stressful. When everyone’s tired and under pressure, it’s easy to want to cut corners, but that’s when standards and SOPs actually matter the most.
What's your favorite thing about the 3rd Infantry Division Realism Unit?
Its members and the custom portion of it. In all versions of games the unit has been in, we've always strived to make something "ours", outside of the vanilla portion. That in my eyes, gives unit cohesion. An example to that is the "Unit Ceremony". Its a cool fun thing, that is in my eyes one of those things that splits us from the rest of the milsim community. We are a Realism Unit, and withing the Military, Ceremony's is a huge thing! I just wish more people swould how up to them and listened in. At last, I have to mention the time, effort and money our BC is putting down to this! Having the same name pop up in over 12years part, its stunning! It motivates not to give up in hard times and to keep pushing.
