Upon completing One Station Unit Training, he was assigned as a Fireteam Member in Alpha Company, where he quickly established himself as a dependable and motivated Soldier. Throughout his career, Staff Sergeant Poynor steadily rose through the ranks, earning promotions to Specialist, Corporal, Sergeant, Warrant Officer Candidate, and Warrant Officer 1 before voluntarily accepting a non-punitive reduction back to Sergeant to take over the Ground Logistics squad as Squad Leader. His willingness to place the mission and the organization above personal advancement reflected the highest traditions of military service. Operationally, Staff Sergeant Poynor participated in numerous combat deployments supporting Operations Egyptian Collapse and Wet Feet, serving across more than thirty-five combat missions. Whether operating as a Fireteam Member, Forward Observer, Fireteam Leader, Section Commander, Aviator, or Squad Leader, he consistently demonstrated professionalism, tactical competence, and calm leadership under pressure. Beyond the battlefield, SSG Poynor made an enduring impact through his staff assignments. As a Recruiter and later Senior Recruiter, he helped strengthen the ranks of the unit and train new recruiters. In Base Maintenance Operations, he served as a Roster Maintenance Specialist, where his efficiency and attention to detail earned him recognition for processing the majority of the shop's workload while maintaining exceptional accuracy. His service in Combat Imaging and Documentation culminated as the Noncommissioned Officer in Charge, where he independently sustained the section during a period of significant manpower shortages. Committed to continuous professional development, Staff Sergeant Poynor completed an impressive list of unit schools and qualifications, including Combat Lifesaver Course, Land Navigation Course, Driver and Operator Course, Airborne School, Air Assault School, Ranger School, Warrior Leaders Course, Warrant Officer Candidate School, Initial Entry Rotary Wing Training, and the Advanced Leadership Course. Throughout his service, Staff Sergeant Poynor earned numerous decorations recognizing both operational excellence and sustained superior performance. Among these were the Meritorious Service Medal, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Joint Service Achievement Medal, multiple Good Conduct Medals, Humanitarian Service Medals, Armed Forces Service Medals, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Presidential Unit Citation, Combat Action Badge, U.S. Army Aviator Wings, and numerous campaign and service awards. His Meritorious Service Medal specifically recognized his extraordinary leadership of Combat Imaging operations, where his initiative, technical expertise, and professionalism directly enhanced the readiness and success of the CID shop. Over more than two years of faithful service, Staff Sergeant Poynor became known not only for his technical proficiency and leadership, but also for his willingness to serve wherever needed. Whether mentoring junior Soldiers, supporting staff operations, documenting the division's history, or leading Soldiers in combat, he consistently exemplified the Army Values and the Warrior Ethos. As Staff Sergeant Hunter Poynor concludes his service with the 3rd Infantry Division, he leaves behind a legacy of dedication, professionalism, and selfless commitment that has strengthened the organization and positively influenced those who served alongside him.
