During Mission Sandstone, first squad was tasked with clearing multiple sectors of a long roadway where halfway through the sector they encountered an enemy strong point. During that firefight, multiple people within the squad were down, after clearing the last of the contacts in the direct vicinity, an enemy counter attack from the western hillside where a mortar pit was located started actively firing on the first squad. The enemy contacts ended up being around 2-3 squads worth of infantry with multiple RPGs that began firing on first squads position. SPC Erickson and SPC Irwin were able to get to a reinforced area of a construction building and provide a huge amount of cover fire while the rest of the squad moved to pick up downed friendly forces. Both Specialists were able to successfully take out all personnel that were firing RPGs while suppressing and moving with the rest of the squad. Throughout the deployment SPC Irwin has been dedicated to every aspect of his squad. He has proven he knows nearly every weapon system that is used within the first squad which led him to helping new recruits every month within the squad to learn and properly utilize these weapon systems. The SPC has shown his own personal growth and development proving week in and week out he is here to put in the work and effort.

During Mission Shaping Effort #10, 1st Squad took heavy fire from the trenchline of OBJ December, during which the entirety of 1st Squad was wiped out, SPC Irwin being the last man in the squad was able to get on Platoon Net and inform the other squads of the mass cas as well as get help in eliminating the enemy forces. Unfortunately during this time SPC Irwin wasn’t able to save everyone and as the last man in the AO, began to take IDF and direct sniper fire. He was able to move around the IDF and sniper fire taking cover while moving back towards 1st Squads Stryker to defend with it and hold the position for the rest of the squad to come back to. SPC Irwin was able to successfully hold his position throughout the fight while alone, until the rest of the squad was able to re-insert.
