Adding Civilian Options for Supporting the Unit

This post came to mind because of the disxussion that has taken place in the discords Enlistment Office on the 04th of January 2026.

Every military has a huge civilian workforce, in fields like Human Resources, Maintainance etc.

Whilest I know that rank requirements for our DMOS positions are born out of the required trust into the given person in that role, still we often times put forth trust as an "advanced payment".

Adding a civilian sector to the unit can not only be a steppong stone into the unit, but also can offer the opportunity for retiring personell to still support their friends and be closer to what was part of their weekends.

It is an interesting concept, one that i have thought about as well during the time i was retired and some time after it as well. While it could work, they would still need to gain knowledge and experience of how the unit works or how things are structured internally.

While not actual military myself, i believe things like Human Resources and Maintenance in the military itself have positions for that as well (Human Resources Command springs to mind). They are all military members ranging from enlisted to commissioned and warrant officers.

I know in the actual Army if someone becomes expert in their craft, they can become a warrant officer and progress in the warrant officer ranks but i don't know how that would work in the milsim sphere.

I also don't know if one should attach ranks of any kind to it or to what things will be limited cause everything holds an element of connection to the milsim. But definitely IMO worth a suggestion to hold a debate about with enlisted from all DMOS's and Cstaff for what could be done with this

I definetly agree that there would be a learning curve involved, for all sides that is. Also it would probably be a rare occurance that people from outside the unit are just lookin for administrative duties. So this could be mostly relevant for people that already know the inner workings of the unit.

When we step into new roles that bring duties and opportunities that are new to us, we are alwaya learning and improving. May that be taking up a new role in a DMOS or on the battlefield. Likewise there are always people willing to support us in those new roles and showing us the ropes, thus being a part of this improvement. I am sure this wouldnt be any different here.

I agree that an open discussion espacially between NCOICs and OICs would be crucial as this may be part of their responsibilities, if there isnt a new role introduced. Speaking from the way it works in Germany this would be an attachè to the Department of Defense.

I know that when i was thinking about it, i looked back at the enlisted ranks of the US Army and i saw the Technician ranks which basically allowed people to still get ranks but not be in any leadership. The Specialist rank during Vietnam era was the same, but the Technician rank is something that stuck with me for ideas on having people still progress ranks but not being able to game but still provide to the unit. I would be happy to provide my eventual input on how i looked at the technician ranks

Talks with NCOICs, OICs, Cstaff and maybe even some retired people for their pure opinion on how they would think about having members be part of the unit, do administrative work but not actively participate in operations and such. That is IMO definitely the way to go forward
