Few months ago we have reached the moment, where for the first time, in years, we have a newly appointed Command Sergeant Major of the Battalion, from his previous position as Company First Sergeant! With 6 years Time In Service at the moment, if you only look into his profile, Sergeant Major Garcia is an illustration of a fully dedicated Non-Comissioned Officer. If you interacted with him at least 2 times, you would have noticed that despite his high position in Chain of Command, he is the leader who can solve any issue regarding any topic related to the unit or the game.

Sergeant Major Garcia joined the unit at the end of 2020, shortly after graduating as well OSUT with honors. Starting as a Private First Class, within 6 years of service, this soldier moved from Fireteam Member to Squad Medic, Fireteam Leader, Platoon Medic, Company Readiness NCO, Company First Sergeant and finally Battalion Command Sergeant Major. As a Fireteam Member he was among the most proficient soldiers within his squad. As a Squad Medic and later Platoon Medic, he was always the buddy to pick you up and treat your wounds regardless of the number and level of wounds you had received in combat. As the Company First Sergeant he was the best advisor in terms of issues and leadership. Anytime you struggled with something as a leader, he was always there to help you out, to assist you.

In his record, this soldier has 7 combat deployments and at least 12 qualifications obtained from courses and schools he went trough in his career, and beeing the one to have hosted all of them shortly after. In my time within this unit I have personally noticed a great input, dedication and improvement of the S-Shop, from SGM Garcia, especially in S-4 Base Manteinance Operations and S-3 Force Improvement Group where he was the main factor at almost every course.

Sticking very close to the NCO Creed and the unit's rules, but also beeing your best help in any occured problems within the unit, Sergeant Major Vinny Garcia is one of the best NCOs this unit offered.

With the ocassion of becoming the new Battalion Command Sergeant Major, our dear senior NCO joined us in an interview about him, regarding his new appointment.

Tell us a little about yourself

I’m Vinny Garcia, born and raised in Brazil. On the civilian side, I hold a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration. I also served in the Brazilian Army in 2017 and was honorably discharged as a Corporal. Both my military service and my background in business have shaped how I approach organization, administration, and leadership within the unit.

How does it feel to switch from Company First Sergeant to Battalion Command Sergeant Major duties and tasks?

It is definitely rewarding to continue leading our NCOs and managing the administrative side of the unit in a larger capacity. Because my responsibilities now encompass the entire Battalion rather than a single Company, my focus has shifted from day to day operations to long term strategy. While the core principles of taking care of soldiers remain the same, the scale and the way I handle unit business at the Battalion level are much different.

How do you feel about being a Battalion Command Sergeant Major at the moment?

Stepping into a position that has only been held once before, making me only the second active duty Sergeant Major in the 23 year history of the 3rdID Realism Unit, is an incredible honor. Reaching this milestone after nearly six years in the unit was forged through resilience and a lot of hard work. It gives me a strong sense of a job well done, though the mission certainly doesn't end here. Even when real life commitments limit my schedule compared to the past, the work continues with the exact same dedication and standard of excellence.

What is your best memory you had as a Company First Sergeant?

Rather than one single moment, what stands out the most is the impact of my nearly three years as a First Sergeant. Looking back at all the NCO development, leadership courses, one-on-ones, counseling's, and the promotion boards where over 125 NCOs past and present participated and got promoted higher in the CoC, gives me a true sense of mission accomplished. As senior leaders in this unit, we operate on the principle of Servant Leadership. Watching our soldiers develop, step up, and grow through the ranks is the ultimate reward.

What are your plans for the Battalion, as a Battalion Command Sergeant Major?

Working closely alongside the Battalion Commander and Battalion Executive Officer, my focus is on the bigger picture and the future of the 3rdID. Battalion leadership will be coordinating unit wide initiatives, joint operations, and potential mergers, as well as overseeing our expansion into new games and the standing up of new Companies when the time comes. A major part of my role will be mentoring and supporting new and old Company leadership teams as we build out fresh SOPs, administrative systems, and training pipelines as well as keeping the discipline of our unit members, all to make sure the Battalion is running at the highest of standards.
