Today marks the 80th anniversary of the United Nations

On October 24 1945, the UN Charter became effective after being ratified by most states that had signed it, including five permanent members of the

Security Council. By doing so, this launched the United Nations as an international organization. Observing this day is a way of honoring that collective

effort and reminding ourselves that progress depends on shared responsibility.

Diverse in culture and history, nations came together and shared a vision of peace and respect for human rights. After World War II, the international community chose the path of building instead of reacting and this day reaffirms that choice. On October 31 1947, the United Nations General Assembly announced that October 24 would be the day that would make known to the people of the world the achievements of the UN and to gain support for the Organization. In 1971, the Assembly would adopt a resolution that recommended that all Member States observe United Nations Day as a public Holiday.

To celebrate United Nations Day, one could read or watch something about their role in your specific country, how the agencies may operate locally. You can also learn about a country that you know little about. Participate in a social media hashtag #UnitedNationsDay and post a thought about global cooperation to start a conversation.

There is no other global organization with the legitimacy, convening power and normative impact of the United Nations. No other global organization gives hope to so many

people for a better world and can deliver the future we want.

Today, the urgency for all countries to come together, to fulfil the promise of the nations united, has rarely been greater.
