    Situation

Third Infantry Division’s 2nd IBCT "Spartans" has deployed to Fort Irwin National Training Center to prepare for combat deployment to Turkey next month in support of US and NATO personnel and assets. Tasked with providing security to the mission in-country, Alpha Company will develop and hone key skillsets to maximize combat power in the field.

Fort Irwin’s remote location in the Mojave Desert provides both terrain and weather similar to that of southeastern Turkey. With steep mountains and ridges, as well as dry, dusty conditions, NTC will acclimate Soldiers to the dramatic landscapes of the Middle East.

Eleventh Armored Cavalry Regiment “Blackhorse” will serve as OPFOR in FTX Shattered Rock. Playing the part of ISIS, Blackhorse Regiment troops will employ all known Islamic State tactics, equipment, and kit. Accordingly, ISIS forces have established a foothold in the southern AO and are threatening to attack NTC.

    Mission

Alpha Company “War Eagles” is ordered to patrol south from NTC in order to secure key wet gap crossings and enemy strongpoints in the southern AO. We must eliminate enemy forces and provide avenues of advance for follow-on missions.

Week 1 of Exercise Shattered Rock will test each element’s mastery of Combined Arms Operations, Convoy Operations, Radio Communications, and Battle Drill 2. Conduct a Platoon Assault.

    1. CP Antioch is a river ford that separates the northern AO from the southern AO. Friendly Turkish Army forces report ISIS militants are holding the checkpoint with a BMP-1. Turkish troops will relieve us once the CP is secure.

    2. OBJ Beirut is a small Middle Eastern town held by an ISIS motorized platoon with armor support including a T-55 tank. There are also a number of civilian noncombatants  reportedly trapped in the town. Clear the area of enemy forces while avoiding noncombatant casualties.

    3. CP Constantinople is a river crossing leading into the eastern AO. Eliminate ISIS forces and hand the area over to follow-on Turkish forces.

    4. OBJ Dubai is a dirt airstrip held by ISIS Lieutenant Amir bin-Aiman, who is smuggling weapons into the area for attacks on NTC. The area is expected to be heavily defended by infantry, armor, and anti-air. Seize the airstrip, capture bin-Aiman, and destroy all weapons and ammunition on site.

    5. CP Erbil is a long bridge crossing that controls traffic from the southern and southeastern AOs. Seize the far side of the bridge to allow for follow-on operations in this sector.

3CAB “Falcons” is ordered to provide initial reconnaissance for First Platoon’s movements south. Once checkpoints are set and ready for transfer to Turkish forces, Falcons will provide ammo and medical resupply as needed. 3CAB will also provide CAS and target interdiction prior and during the assaults on OBJ Beirut and OBJ Dubai.

Coordinated movements and fires of mounted, dismounted, and air assets will maximize combat power and ensure timely completion of all assigned tasks.

Rules of Engagement: Military-age male with weapon and combat kit. Suicide bombers are likely; warning shots are authorized. Civilian elders and property owners may be armed, but have been instructed via radio and satellite TV to remain indoors during the exercise. Do not enter any civilian houses unless there are confirmed hostiles inside. Limit use of explosives in OBJ Beirut.
