  • 1/A-CO, 1-2IN - Alpha Company, First Platoon

    Start: 10/24/21 17:00
    End: 10/24/21 19:30
    After action report

    Objectives

    1. Destroy enemy motorized column in Mussembe
    2. Eliminate GSIM mortar encampment in the jungle
    3. Free IDAP hostages (later discovered, not a planned objective)
    4. Eliminate GSIM presence & HQ in Koundara. Secure a GSIM HVT believed to be inside the HQ.

    Accidents

    • KIA:
      • SFC C.Brock
    • WIA:
      • SGT D.Shade
      • 2LT J.Drake
    • Lost equipment:
      • 1x Stryker GMG

    Areas of Strength

    • Distance covered. Widowmakers traveled quite far today, essentially covering 5km of GSIM infested forests, towns and hamlets.
    • Situational awareness. Being caught off-guard is happening less, by now most of the members in Widowmakers have some experience in the jungle and know what to expect behind every tree.
    • Securing POWs. In the past there have been many cases of "execution" when an enemy was still alive but down. This mission we were able to take 3 enemy POWs.

    Areas of Weakness

    • Platoon organization could be improved. The unintentional split at the unknown forces marker caused significant overhead.
    • Protection of assets. The platoon and S2 had an agreement that vehicles left behind would be left untouched, platoon got too comfortable with this, thinking they'd be protected even if engagements were taking place right next to it. In the future we should finish enemy contact before abandoning our vehicles.
    • Suppressive fire. Despite ending the mission with relatively low ammo, suppressive fire and usage of vehicle weapons could be improved. The CROW systems are extremely useful in the jungle thanks to thermals but are often abandoned in favor of more movement flexibility.

    Suggested Improvements

    • Once again complaints about low FPS. The only feasible fix is switching this map for the same map with the old trees. However, since it's only 3-4 more missions we should just push through it.
    • 3CAB waiting time is excruciating. It's not normal that a resupply or extract bird takes 15-20 minutes to arrive, all the while we hear complaints that we don't give them enough taskings. Pilots being uncomfortable in this terrain is also too obvious, constant refusal of reasonable LZs, landing almost 500 meters away from designated LZs,...

    Mission Summary

First platoon convoyed from Camp Truman to a dismount point close to the Motorized column. Upon arrival at the DM, enemies were waiting and prepared. First and second squad broke contact and continued their hike through the jungle to assault the column from the east. Third and Fourth were left behind to deal with the contact. Eventually the platoon got back together on the east side, and a platoon assault was executed on the remaining handful of enemies that occupied the town. Enemy vehicles were gathered and detonated.

Secondly, Widowmakers assaulted the mortar position. This location was already heavily engaged by CAS making Widowmakers' job very easy. A POW was rescued and placed in a Stryker. While clearing the surrounding bunkers, Widowmakers got a call that GSIM forces were gathering just to the north, and civilian hostages were seen.

Initially, Widowmakers decided to focus on the GSIM HQ and deal with the hostages first, but due to some miscommunication and poor organization, most of the platoon continued to the HQ, while Widowmakers PHQ alongside re-inserts cleared the hamlet and waited for resupplies as well as re-inserts. In the confusion, Widowmaker Fox was taken hostage by a rogue enemy. Efforts were made to free him but it resulted in a suicide bomber taking out most of Scorpions, Widowmaker 6 and Widowmaker Fox. Doc was able to arrive in-time to save 6 and Fox as well as a single Scorpion member, the rest was KIA.

Eventually the platoon managed to group up in Koundara, where they continued to clear the village and clear the HQ. Unfortunately the HVT was KIA, however, 2 POWs were secured and due to technical issues the debrief was held at the now liberated GSIM HQ.
