On February 23, 1945, during the Battle of Iwo Jima in World War II, five U.S. Marines and a Navy corpsman famously raised the American flag atop Mount Suribachi, a moment captured by Associated Press photographer Joe Rosenthal. The image became one of the most enduring symbols of American patriotism and sacrifice.

The raising of the flag on Iwo Jima remains a symbol of American resilience and determination in the face of adversity. As the veterans who returned to the island to commemorate the event showed, the memory of that day and the sacrifices made by those who fought there will never be forgotten.
