  On February 23, 1945, during the Battle of Iwo Jima in World War II, five U.S. Marines and a Navy corpsman famously raised the American flag atop Mount Suribachi, a moment captured by Associated Press photographer Joe Rosenthal. The image became one of the most enduring symbols of American patriotism and sacrifice.
