On October 26th, National Day of the Deployed annually honors the United States military personnel deployed around the globe.  This day is typically observed by individual families across the country where families often create personalized care packages and send them to soldiers serving in various conflict zones. The most common form of celebration for this event is to send care packages as mentioned above, however there are many ways people honor the military. Some choose to perform ceremonies recognizing veterans and their families for the sacrifices they made in the defense of the country.

Shelle Michaels Aberle founded National Day of the Deployed in 2006. Ms. Aberle approached then North Dakota Governor John Hoeven for support of a North Dakota Proclamation for the day. Governor Hoeven was the first governor in the United States to recognize deployed troops in a formal proclamation.  While it is still a rather new holiday celebrated in the United States, the passion that went in to its creation still persists across the nation to this as many Americans are still serving overseas.
